Demonstration was performed as part of an after-class event for a popular human sexuality course at the American university.
The president of an American university said on Thursday he was launching an investigation into an on-campus presentation of a live sex act performed for students at an after class event.
President Morton Schapiro of Northwestern University, which is of Chicago in Evanston, said he was "troubled and disappointed" after hearing about the use of a sex toy on a naked woman by her fiancé in front of more than 100 students.
The demonstration was performed as part of an after-class event for a popular human sexuality course, at the prestigious private university, according to The Daily Northwestern.
The February 21 incident took place in a session which students were not required to attend and they were advised in advance of the explicit nature of the activity.
"I feel it represented extremely poor judgment on the part of our faculty member," Schapiro said in a statement. "I simply do not believe this was appropriate, necessary, or in keeping with Northwestern University's academic mission."
Schapiro said he has directed that the incident be fully investigated.
"Many members of the Northwestern community are disturbed by what took place on our campus," Schapiro said. "So am I."
Psychology Prof. J. Michael Bailey, who teaches the class, could not be reached for comment.
In an e-mail to his students, published in The Daily Northwestern, he wrote that he organizes optional after-class events which feature speakers addressing interesting aspects of sexuality.
Bailey wrote that "some experiences are educational and interesting in non-traditional ways" and that student feedback has been "uniformly positive."
He wrote that it was "too early to say" if he had any regrets.

With large round eyes, sharp oval face, pointed chin, sexy body and thin long slender legs, it reminds me of one of the pretty Japanese anime or Final Fantasy game characters which is every guy's fantasy! Now, where can we order one!? While many claims that she is fake and used PhotoShop to create her barbie look; no matter what, Wang Jia Yun definitely has most of the Koreans going crazy trying to befriend her!
And in her latest status message, she mentioned that she just wants a normal life and repays her parents by getting into college. She never wanted to be popular public figure. Teachers have called her up after seeing her pictures online and she couldn't describe how she is feeling at the moment. Maybe some of the pictures were photo-shopped but she doesn't really deserve all the hate comments and remarks! Anyway, only the best of Wang Jia Yun 王嘉韻 available here, all filtered by http://dailylenglui.blogspot.com.
A Chinese high school student, Wang Jiayun, topped Korean sites as the most-searched item for two days in February.
On the afternoon of Feb 17, the number of visits to Wang Jiayun’s weibo surpassed 3.5 million.
Chinese and Korean netizens attribute her popularity to her likeness to large eyed characters made famous by Japanese 'manga' culture.
However, some netizens say her photos are heavily photoshopped to give her the look similar to what netizens call 'an inflatable doll'.

[OMG] Gmail glitch erases emails from 150,000 accounts
Google working to restore all affected accounts in 12 hours' time.
WASHINGTON - Google was restoring service to Gmail users on Monday who had email messages deleted from their inboxes over the weekend.

"For those Gmail users reporting missing messages, our engineers are working to restore them as soon as possible," Google said on a webpage that provides updates on the status of its various products.
"Affected users will be temporarily unable to sign in while we repair their accounts," the Mountain View, California-based company said.
Google said less than 0.08 percent of the users of the free Web-based email service had been affected by the problem.
Google does not release official figures for the total number of Gmail users but they are estimated to number around 200 million.
Google said Monday it expects to fully restore the Gmail accounts of users who saw their emails deleted from their inboxes over the weekend.
"We hope to have everybody back by the end of the day," said Andrew Kovacs, a Google spokesman. "It is our expectation that we will restore all accounts."
Google said less than 0.02 percent of the users, or about 38,000 accounts, of the free Web-based email service had been affected by the problem, fewer than previously reported.
Google had said earlier the problem affected 0.08 percent of Gmail users.
It says everything should be resolved within 12 hours.
Gmail disruptions, while rare, are seen by some industry analysts as a setback to the Mountain View, California-based Google's efforts to promote Gmail and other Web-based services to businesses.
