A 22-year-old woman has made medical history after being discovered with a third nipple on her foot, startling researchers who believe it is the first of its kind.
If present, extra nipples tend to be found above the waist.
Between one to five per cent of the human population are believed to suffer from the condition, which is clinically referred to as supernumerary breast tissue.
Medical staff believe the 4cm nipple's appearance so far down the body, in this case, is a total one off.
The researchers found a well-formed nipple surrounded by areola and hair and further microscopic examination of the dermis showed hair follicles, ecrine glands and sebaceous glands.
The woman said that it had been there since birth and that it caused her no pain.
There are a few known famous people with third nipples.
British Lily Allen revealed on television that she has a small third nipple on her left breast.
Actor Mark Wahlberg has a miniature third nipple below his left one. Wahlberg described it as a "prized possession".
