IN a front-page "true confession", a young divorcee told Harian Metro that she went through six abortions in four years to please her boyfriend and because she was taken in by his sweet promises to marry her.
The 32-year-old woman, who only wanted to be known as Balqis, said that after her marriage crashed in 2007, she befriended and fell in love with a married man.
With three children to fend for after her divorce and uncertain about her future, Balqis depended on the man, who allegedly promised to marry her.
"Unfortunately, my love for him made me go overboard and I got pregnant six times," she told the tabloid, adding that she paid a private clinic RM300 (S$125.70) each time to "wash away" an unwanted baby.
Balqis said her doctor was not concerned about her abortions but on her fifth request, he told her that he was worried it could affect future pregnancies.
"In one instance, I got pregnant barely two months after an abortion," she said, adding that she did not observe any confinement period after each abortion because of work and fear that her colleagues would find out.
Balqis, who did not say what her work was, said that despite her feelings of guilt, she continued to harbour hopes that her boyfriend would eventually marry her.
However, due to frequent abortions, she said she was always miserable and depressed, besides feeling guilty over what she had done.
"Worse, I'm always hearing little children cry when I sleep," she said, adding that the abortions caused her weight to reduce drastically to a mere 47kg.
